The Route
Shortly after you begin this 22 mile ride you will cross the Utica Mills Covered bridge, a Burr arch truss design built in 1834. This truss combines a series of triangles with a long wooden arch to make the bridge more rigid and thus stronger. Originally the bridge stretched 250 feet across the Monocacy River on Devilbiss Road. One 100 foot span was saved, dismantled, and subsequently reconstructed at its current location.
The subsequent ride consists of rolling hills amidst farms and rural residential areas. In most cases traffic is light to virtually nonexistent.
A highlight of the ride is the crossing of the Monocacy River on the Legore Bridge, built in 1898 to transport limestone from the Legore Quarry and to accommodate the state-owned road for public travel. The bridge is 340 feet long and rises 64 feet above the gorge.
